Swedish cardamom buns

These cardamom buns are a classic for the Swedish 'fika' tradition of a coffee time snack. They are easier than you might think to make at home and taste gently sweet, warmly spiced and delicious.

Let’s get started!

Prepare the dough and filling

01

The dough here is a butter-enriched yeasted dough with added cardamom. Once it's almost done rising, mix the cardamom butter filling.

Roll out the dough and top with filling

02

Roll into an even rectangle and spread on the sweet cardamom butter.

Fold, cut and twist

03

Fold the dough in half, so filling is in the middle then cut into strips, cut almost through each then twist together and tuck in ends.

Leave for a second rise

04

Place the twisted buns on a lined baking sheet to rise a little more before baking.

Bake!

05

Lightly brush with eggwash before baking until golden brown.  The inside will stay soft and fluffy while the outside crisps up.

Perfect on their own or with a cup of coffee or tea!
