I am pretty sure I have mentioned before that my eldest son goes through phases where he pretty much eats the same thing for breakfast weeks on end. Sometimes it's a conversation that changes it, other times he tries something I am having that he then wants, other times I have no idea.
This banana oatmeal that we have been eating nearly every day for a few weeks now was after I had it one day and it's been a favorite ever since.
I am not sure why I first decided to make banana oatmeal but I had made it once or twice before my son eyed it up one morning. We were reading a story and he asked to have a try, then continued to finish a whole bowlful, having already in theory eaten something else for breakfast.
So I guess you could call it an instant hit. And not surprising, really, given it's flavored with banana and (optionally, although to us not really) a little maple syrup.
That day I had to go and make some more banana oatmeal for myself, but since it's pretty easy to make, that wasn't such a big deal.
How to make this fruity oatmeal
All you do is:
- Cook the oatmeal in milk with a little cinnamon.
- Separately mash a banana
- Once the oatmeal has cooked, mix in the banana.
- Drizzle over a little maple syrup and top with some nuts, if you like, and enjoy.
You can obviously adapt the toppings to taste, or skip them if you are in a rush. Either way, it will be tasty and nicely warming for colder weather.
This banana oatmeal makes a great breakfast for any day of the week. It's easy and quick to make and full of ingredients to keep you going through the morning.
Delicious banana, maple syrup add to the creamy, hearty oats and make for a great start to the day. I imagine it's going to be a favorite in our house for a while to come.

Banana oatmeal
Ingredients
- 1 cup old fashioned oats rolled oats
- 1 cup milk
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- 1 banana
- optional - a few nuts eg candied pecans and/or slices of banana and maple syrup to serve
Instructions
- Place the oats, milk and cinnamon (if using) in a small pan. Press the oats down a little so it they are covered by the milk. Warm over a medium heat, stirring a couple times as it cooks - you want the milk warmed through to a simmer but not a strong boil. The milk should reduce down to look less liquidy.
- While it's warming, mash the banana. Once cooked, mix the oatmeal and mashed banana together and serve warm with your choice of toppings.
